Car InsuranceIf you intend to use a car on the public roads in the UK, you are required by law to have insurance in place and you will not be able to tax your vehicle without proof of this in the form of a certificate of motor insurance. In terms of meeting this legal requirement, you only need third-party (sometimes referred to as public liability) insurance – this is the absolute minimum level of car insurance cover that is available.Car Insurance:For many people third-party insurance will not be the best option, as it does not cover the value of the car in the case of theft or fire damage. If your car is worth very little and the extra cost of the premium for fire and theft cover outweighs the cost of the car then it would make sense to have the minimal cover, however the cost of replacement for most people’s cars is far greater than they would save by choosing to go without the fire and theft cover. With third-party, fire and theft car insurance the car is covered if it is stolen or damaged by fire but if you crash the car you are still going to have to pay for the repairs yourself – if you opt for fully-comprehensive cover this is not the case. On a comprehensive policy any damage to your car is covered regardless of the cause, although you will have to pay the policy excess and you may stand to loose your no-claims bonus upon making a claim.
